The Chronicles of The One series eerily starts with a sickness taking over the world and wiping out more than half of the world’s population. Thinking back on this gives me goosebumps since we are living in such an uncertain and scary time right now with COVID-19. I’m so glad I read it last year, or I’m not sure I would have been able to get through it. The Chronicles of The One series was the first non-romance series I’ve read of Nora’s. It’s a post-apocalyptic story about loss, love, and strength. Strength to keep going even though everything around you is falling apart. Love how Nora added magic to the series to give it some sparkle. Let’s break down each book, and I’ll give you my quick thoughts on each.
Year One by Nora Roberts Goodreads Score 4.03 | 59,357 Ratings | 6,181 Reviews ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Year One was hands down my favorite book of the series. I was so drawn into the storyline and loved following along with all the characters. Year One is very captivating, and you’ll find yourself having a hard time putting the book down. You’ll fall in love with each of the characters and their unique perspectives.
Of Blood and Bone by Nora Roberts Goodreads Score 4.29 | 24,355 Ratings | 2,288 Reviews ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The second installment of The Chronicles of The One series, Of Blood and Bone, started a lot like the first. A lot was happening, and you couldn’t wait to read what would happen next. However, halfway through was when Nora lost me. All the suspense started to dwindle, it was no longer exciting, and I was just trying to get through it.
The Rise of Magicks by Nora Roberts Goodreads Score 4.15 | 13,958 Ratings | 1,497 Reviews ⭐⭐⭐
The battle of light vs. dark is the best way I can describe this book. Not going to lie, I had a challenging time getting through this last book. I was so excited to see how the story would come together but was sadly disappointed. The ending lacked luster, and it was predictable and boring.
Final Thoughts
Ugh. I don’t know if I can in good conscience recommend this series. Like I mentioned earlier the first book was phenomenal. I would highly recommend it but the others were meh and I’m just not sure it’s worth investing your time.

I really loved Year One. It got me hooked, I got invested in the characters. I first read it a little after it came out and reread it when I got a hold of the third one so I could read them one after the other. I love how Nora Robert writes, even if I don’t love her books I still get invested in the characters. It’s rare if I don’t. It went so quickly for me. It would have been a five star, but the ending was just something I have always hated in books. This might be a spoiler, so SPOILERS AHEAD————–
The ending had me crying worse than in the beginning (her writing can get me crying so quickly) and the part I hated was with Simon, well and before too with Max. I think it was too soon- the last chapter. It didn’t seem the time gave enough closure on the situation and Simon was too soon. That got it down to a four.
Of Blood and Bone was great until , yes , half way through. The time lapses were so quick to happen. I think the amount of characters were too many for just a trilogy. If it were a longer series I think it would have worked better. I did care what happened to all those characters and I wanted more information on all of them. I was still very invested and reading it went so quickly because I needed to know what happened next. I was also very surprised I didn’t notice the lack of romance in this one until I was already reading the third 😁. I expect romance in her books and didn’t realize it had very little if any. But it also felt rushed, so this one was a little disappointing, especially because of how good Year One was for me. This was a three.
The Rise of Magicks also had that same feeling of being rushed. But still, I was still very much invested. I loved the characters and wanted more because of them. The way time moved was choppy for me because, again , it is a trilogy and it felt things were left out or things happened so conveniently to move the story to the ending without making it longer than a trilogy. I was probably on the last chapter or two and I was questioning if maybe I had it wrong and it was four books instead because there was no way it could have a satisfying conclusion with so little pages left to read. It was trilogy, and although I did like the ending, the way it got there had me feeling that I missed details in between the chapters. Things happened and we weren’t told they had happened. I loved what I was reading, but I felt the lack of details, I felt how rushed it was to get to that ending. With so much happening it needed to be a longer series , with so many characters it needed to be a longer series. I still thought it was good, I still loved the characters, and as usual when I read her books, I wanted more after the ending. I want to know the details of the characters after the story is over, she gets me that into her characters🤷🏻♀️😁. But yes, even though it was a page turner for me it wasn’t as good as Year One. Also a three star.
I would not recommend the series to people that haven’t read her before because the series wasn’t as good as some of her others, and they probably will be disappointed with it.
And I couldn’t make this shorter than my first try, ity probably even longer 😁
Sorry, I can go on and on over books I am really into it even if I don’t like them, and I love Nora Robert’s writing.
You nailed it!! I was so invested in the first round of characters and wanted more of them. I cried my eyes out at the end of book one as well. Thank you so much for your thoughts!! Great points and I couldn’t agree more!!
