Hello hello! In today’s post, we are talking about the newly released book The Ickabog by J.K. Rowling. The boys and I came across this book before the holidays during a Target run. You can check out our haul from that trip here. One thing about me is I love a pretty book cover, and this one immediately caught my eye, plus J.K. Rowling.

Description

This chapter book is considered a children’s novel, and the recommended reading age is eight and above. There are over sixty chapters, but they are short, which allowed me to read one or two chapters a night for the boys. The book also features beautiful color illustrations by kids from across the US and Canada, which my boys loved.

The Ickabog tells the story of the people of Cornucopia and a legendary creature, the Ickabog. The kingdom of Cornucopia is known for its riches and famous for its food. The people are happy, rich, and well fed, but unfortunate circumstances will soon cast a shadow over the kingdom.

My Thoughts

You guys, this book is very dark. There were numerous times as I was reading when I would think to myself, WTF, how’s this a children’s book and was so close to putting it away. There is murder, lies, cruelty, hopelessness, I mean just plain wicked. However, by the end of the book, there was a good lesson. Furthermore, the book allowed me to have critical and difficult conversations with the boys, which I can appreciate. However, I can’t in good conscience recommend this book for children. My boys loved it and were hooked but again, proceed with caution. Being that as it may, as an adult reading it, I found myself immersed in the story and dying to hear what would happen next. Maybe read it for yourself and then decide if you want your kids to read it as well.
