Description

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned—from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren—an enigmatic artist and single mother—who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town—and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides.  Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood—and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.

My Thoughts

The second I finished Little Fires Everywhere, I added it to my all-time favorites list. I love this book! I usually gravitate towards books with more dialogue, and this story is told mostly from the narrator’s perspective. There is so much happening in this book, but the author did an excellent job developing all the characters. It was easy to follow, and I now have a new found love for this style of writing.

“Most of the time, everyone deserves more than one chance. We all do things we regret now and then. You just have to carry them with you.”

Little Fires Everywhere touches on so many hot topics, motherhood, race, fitting in, adoption, sex, high school experiences, right vs. wrong, family life, and so much more. The author does a brilliant job bringing all different kinds of perspectives to light. You’re left contemplating each of these perspectives and empathizing with both of the polar opposite characters. In my last review on The Handmaid’s Tale, I shared how every once in a while, I love a good book that pulls you out of your comfort zone and pushes you to think. Little Fires Everywhere is, without a doubt, one of those books. Set in the 90s with references to Jerry Springer and Monica Lewinsky, it also took me back to my adolescents. I highly recommend this book!

“To a parent, your child wasn’t just a person: your child was a place, a kind of Narnia, a vast eternal place where the present you were living and the past you remembered and the future you longed for all existed at once.”

TV Show

Little Fires Everywhere is being adapted into a mini-series on Hulu and will be streaming starting March 18th. It is set to consist of eight episodes and will be staring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Will you be watching? I can NOT wait!!

“I’ll tell you a secret. A lot of times, parents are not the best at seeing their children clearly.”
