Summer Reading Roundup

This post contains commissionable links.

Anyone else feels like summer flew by? I can’t believe fall is just around the corner, but I’m here for it! I was a busy bee when it came to reading this summer. I knocked out 15 books over the summer months, and I’ve surpassed my Goodreads reading challenge goal for this year by 12 books so far. Needless to say, I’m pretty proud of my self. 😊 In this post I’ll be listing a few of the books I read over the summer and give you a quick description as well as a short review. Let’s dive in!

“Everything went wrong when I trimmed his bush. And no, it’s not what you’re thinking. I’m a professional. The client hired me to trim a bush in his garden for a party. I accidentally turned it into something that rhymes with “a big rock and walls.” Imagine my surprise when the art world decides it’s a masterpiece.”

Her Bush is book six in the Objects of Attraction Series. This book is well written and faced pace. Nell Snell is a 22-year old that hasn’t found her calling yet. She’s a clutz but super funny and stays true to herself. Harry, on the other hand, is her complete opposite. A successful self-made businessman, he’s made his money by working hard and being smart. He enjoys his money, but it does not define him, but everyone he’s ever dated has been the complete opposite. He’s looking for someone genuine, and Nell fits that description perfectly. If you’re looking for a laugh out loud novel, you’ve found it!

“Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother…only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.”

Love and Other Words is one of the top 3 books from all the books I read over the summer. The love story of Macy and Elliot is one that transcends time. Told in alternating timelines of then and now.  It is such a beautiful story of love and loss. It’s such a profound book, and you go through so many emotions while reading it. The story is well written and has a level of suspense as you wonder what happened between Macy and Elliot all those years ago. I don’t want to give too much away because it is a must-read, in my opinion. I couldn’t put it down!

“For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.”

A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club pick, Where the Crawdads Sing is hands down my favorite of her picks so far. This book started slow for me, but by the end, I was hanging on to every word dying to find out how it was going to end. Ahhhhh so good!! I’ve heard the book is going to the big screen and I couldn’t be more excited to see this story come to life. Kya is, without a doubt, the definition of a female warrior. She’s a force to be reckoned with. Highly recommend!!

“Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia’s family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princess–a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner.

For ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She’s endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside. For ten years, the Ash Princess has seen her land pillaged and her people enslaved. That all ends here.”

Ash Princess is the first book of a trilogy. With most first books in a series, this book focuses on setting the scene so to speak. It is a fantasy novel, so there are a lot of new words, culture, and language, but I was able to follow along just fine. You’ll fall in love with Theo’s strength and relate to her realness. She has endured so much pain and loss, but she doesn’t let it knock her down. This story is pretty dark but has a sprinkle of magic tied in and let’s not forget the little love triangle. I’m excited to dive into the second book and see where the story goes. Stay tuned!

“Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.”

The Hate U Give pulls at your heartstrings. Such a beautiful, raw, real, and powerful story.  I balled my eyes out. This story could not have come at a better time as the challenges faced in this book are one and the same with what we see happening in our country today. The book does a great job portraying all sides. This cycle must be broken. My favorite line of the book, “Sometimes you can do everything right, and things will still go wrong. The key is never to stop doing right.” Read the book and then watch the movie. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
